Garzelli takes overall giro lead at stage 8, while Froome and the winner of last year’s finale will now battle it out against Quintana, who remains unbeaten with seven top-10s this year, and Alberto Contador.

Orica-GreenEdge head into Sunday’s stage as favourites. The team will be hoping for the kind of form they had in the Giro and Milan-San Remo, in which they finished 11th.

Stage 18 starts with a small ascent before the opening bunch sprint at 5.5km, which has been converted into a climb. Orica-GreenEdge’s GC leader is Joaquim Rodríguez with stage leader Edvald Boasson Hagen second and Dan Martin third.

Rabo Bilez of Spain and André Greipel of Germany are also expected to attack, although team leader Dan Martin claims he’s not too concerned as he is in perfect condition and has had “the usual treatment”.
