Speaking about Froome’s recent injury, Garmin’s chief executive officer Dan Martin said: “I haven’t spoken to him about his injury but I’ve been told to keep my ear to the ground about where Froome is at his fitness level, where his condition is and we’re hoping to address that quickly.”

“We are really happy to have Chris join us on the team. We’re all aware that the decision to leave the Tour was a difficult one for Chris, but we think it has helped to improve his fitness and give him the best chance of making the Vuelta again.”

Froome’s Garmin teammate Tom Simpson told the Press Association: “He’s a fantastic athlete and a good person and I’m pleased he’s going to get the opportunity to stay in the sport for a long time to come.”
