Sergio Martinez stopped out Matthew Macklin in the eleventh round in New York on Saturday night.

The Argentine had to get up from the floor after being knocked down in the seventh round to beat the Irishman and to retain his WBC “diamond” middleweight title.

Martinez seemed to be spurred by the knockdown and returned the favour twice in the penultimate round.

Macklin’s helpers threw in the towel after the second knockdown as their man showed the effects of a severe onslaught.

Spectators at the packed Madison Square Garden got their money’s worth on St Patrick’s Day as Macklin made the fight one to remember.

Martinez improved his record to 49-2-2, including his 28th knockout. Macklin’s dropped to 28-4; 19.
