Virginia takes care of James Madison

Charlottesville, VA ( – Malcom Brogdon led the way with 11
points and four rebounds to help the 24th-ranked Virginia Cavaliers defeat the
James Madison Dukes by a 61-41 margin at John Paul Jones Arena.

Brogdon started off the game with a three and was 3-of-4 from beyond the arc.
Anthony Gill also contributed 11 points and was successful on all four of his
field goal attempts.

Mike Tobey and Darion Atkins both contributed 10 points as Virginia (1-0) has
won all nine contests against James Madison (0-1) dating back to 1977-78.

Sophomore guard Ron Curry tallied 11 points and three steals for the Dukes.
Charles Cooke and Tom Vodanovich both added nine points in the defeat.

Virginia went on an early 17-1 run in the first half. Tobey sank a hook shot
at 10:06 to snap a three-minute span that saw no points for either team.

After a layup from Anthony Gill made it 19-11 for Virginia at 7:43, both teams
could not add a single point until Akil Mitchell drove in for a layup at 4:24
for Virginia.

Curry drained a three with 1:14 remaining to halt a scoreless streak of over
seven minutes for JMU. The Cavaliers took a 32-14 lead into halftime.

The Cavaliers doubled James Madison’s offensive output when Justin Anderson
drove in for a layup to make it 46-23 at 11:47 of the second half.

Vodanovich and Andrey Semenov drained consecutive 3-pointers to make it 48-29
at the 8:17 mark, but Joe Harris answered right back with a three of his own
at 7:54 to stop any momentum that James Madison might have gained.

Jackson Kent added the final four points for James Madison on a layup and free
throw shots before a layup from Darion Atkins of Virginia at 1:56 accounted
for the final score.

Game Notes

Virginia is now 15-1 in their last 16 season-openers … Virginia is among the
preseason Top 25 for the first time since the 2001-02 campaign … James
Madison shot for 34.1 percent from the floor and 6-of-23 from beyond the arc.
