Mata off to a winning start, Liverpool thrash Everton

Juan Mata enjoyed a winning start to his Manchester United career while Liverpool continued their dominance over their rivals Everton in the Merseyside derby last night in the Premier League.

Juan Mata showed his class barely 24 hours after putting pen to paper for his new club Manchester United in a 2-0 win over Cardiff at Old Trafford. Goals from the fit again Van Persie and Ashley Young giving United the win, however Mata’s performance would have been duly noticed by the United faithful, the Spaniard at the heart of everything that was good about the home teams attacking play.

Liverpool continued their goal scoring run with a 4-0 thrashing of neighbours Everton. A Sturridge brace and a powerful header by Gerrard saw the home team go 3 up by the break. Luis Suarez put the emphatic victory beyond any doubt inside the first five minutes of the second half when he broke free on goal slid a shot past the Everton keeper.

The result sees Liverpool go unbeaten in its last four Premier League contests to improve to 46 points on the season and move the club four points clear of Everton.

Also on Tuesday, Arsenal and Southampton split the points at St. Mary’s as the two sides played to a thrilling 2-2 draw, Norwich City and Newcastle shared the spoils at Carrow Road in a 0-0 draw, Swansea City bagged two second-half goals at the Liberty Stadium  to cruise to a 2-0 defeat of Fulham and Jason Puncheon produced the lone goal at Selhurst Park as Crystal Palace earned a 1-0 victory over Hull City.
