Real Madrid maintained their six point gap at the head of the Primera División table Saturday night with Karim Benzema the starman as his side crushed a poor Real Sociedad at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu.

Gonzalo Higuaín put Madrid ahead on five minutes, and they were rarely troubled thereafter with Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema both grabbing doubles. Sociedad’s reply from Xabi Prieto was nicely struck but mattered little.

Lionel Messi and Gerard Pique scored for Barcelona in a 2-0 win at Mallorca.

Messi’s strike took his season’s league tally to 35, four days after he hit a hat-trick in the 5-3 win over Granada which made him Barcelona’s all-time leading scorer. He also beat his own record of number of goals in a league season he had set in 2009/2010.
