Venezuela’s Pastor Maldonado completed a stunning pole-to-flag win at the Spanish Grand Prix to secure a maiden Grand Prix victory and Williams’ first since the 2004 Brazilian Grand Prix.

Maldonado produced a near faultless drive to see off the challenge of home crownd favourite Fernando Alonso, had to settle for second after briefly leading the race, while Finn Kimi Raikkonen took third place for Lotus.

Within a month of founder Sir Frank Williams’ 70th birthday, Maldonado, starting the weekend as a 300-1 outsider, became the first Venezuelan to savour the winner’s champagne, finishing just 3.1 seconds ahead of home favourite Fernando Alonso in his Ferrari.
