Tiger Woods got his Tour Championship off to the best possible start as he outscored Rory McIlroy by three shots in the opening round.

Playing with the world no.1 in the final pairing in front of huge galleries at East Lake Golf Club, Woods birdied two of the last four holes for a four-under-par 66 for a share of the lead with Justin Rose.

McIlroy, who led the FedExCup points standings coming into the PGA Tour’s fourth and final playoff event, carded a 69.

Matt Kuchar and Steve Stricker both shot 67 and are a shot off the pace.
