Paul Lawrie grabbed the lead going into the weekend on another day that the Gary Player course at Sun City held the initiative.

On another difficult day for the elite 12 field, Lawrie carded a three-under-par 69 for a total of 140, which leaves him with a narrow lead over Martin Kaymer, who matched his score for the day. The Scot was striking the ball sublimely however his short game let him down somewhat and could have ended up finishing at least a few shots better off.

Kaymer enjoyed a slightly up-and-down round but eventually signed for a creditable 70, and is the Lawrie’s closest challenger at three-under.

Charl Schwartzel and Louis Oosthuizen both currently sit at one-under par, after firing rounds of 71 and 72 respectively. Oosthuizen’s efforts were all the more impressive given that he felt under the weather for much of the day.

The South African duo have Francesco Molinari and overnight co-leader Bill Haas for company at one-under, with Lee Westwood slipping back to even-par for the tournament after a 73 today.
