Federer eases through in Dubai

Roger Federer began his quest for a 6th Dubai Duty Free title when he eased through the first round with a straight sets victory over Benjamin Becker.

The 17 times Grand Slam champion is a 5 times winner in the Emirate got his campaign off to the perfect start with a 6/1, 6/4 annihilation of the German Becker.

The Swiss maestro is returning to action for the first time since his thrashing at the hands of rival Nadal in the semifinals of the Australian Open and seemed to hit his stride immediately.

Ahead of the season Federer announced that former Slam winner Stefan Edberg would be moving into his corner in a coaching capacity and much of the Swedes former game was evident in Federer’s play during the Australian Open. The hard courts of Dubai will provide Federer fans a further glimpse of how effective this partnership might turn out to be and whether his influence can help deliver another Grand Slam.

Other first round winners today included number 7 seed Philipp Kohlschreiber, Dmitry Tursunov, Roberto Bautista and Andreas Seppi that needed 3 tough sets to overcome Florian Mayer.

Tomorrow’s featured matches sees defending champion Novak Djokovic open his campaign for a 5th title in 6 years against Dennis Istomin, number 2 seed Juan Martin Del Potro takes on Somdev Dewarman while Rotterdam winner Tomas Berdych faces Marius Copil.
