Santos inches closer to top spot with Monterrey defeat

Mexico City, Mexico (SportsNetwork.com) – Santos netted three second-half
goals on Friday and hung on to edge Monterrey by a 3-2 score, pulling the club
to within six points of first place in Liga MX.

After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, the home side finally broke the deadlock
four minutes into the second half when Oribe Morones found the back of the net
and Alonso Escoboza doubled Santos’ lead on the hour mark.

Three minutes later, Mauro Cejas made it 3-0 for the home side and they looked
to be well on their way to victory, but Humberto Suazo bagged a brace for
Montrrey to make it 3-2, but the visitors were unable to come all the way back
as Santos claimed an important three points.

The result sees Santos rise to 26 points from their first 13 matches, while
Monterrey remains stuck on 13 points.

Elsewhere in Mexico on Friday, Wilberto Cosme and Esteban Paredes found the
back of the net for Queretaro in a comfortable 2-0 win over Leon.

On Saturday, Luis Perea netted an equalizer 20 minutes from time for Cruz Azul
in a 1-1 draw with league leaders America, while Luis Tejada scored a stoppage-
time winner for Veracruz in a 1-0 result over Morelia.

Alan Pulido scored on either side of the intermission to lead Tigres to a 3-1
win over Atlante, while Lucas Viatri and Luis Garcia exchanged goals as
Jaguares and UNAM battled to a 1-1 stalemate.

On Sunday, Carlos Sanchez and Luis Noriega tallied for Puebla in a 2-0 result
against Atlas, while 10-man Toluca held out for a scoreless draw at home
against Tijuana.

In Sunday’s final fixture, Jurgen Damm, Othoniel Arce and Marco Ontiveros all
scored for Pachuca in a comfortable 3-1 victory over Guadalajara.
