South Africa’s Paralympic gold medalist Oscar Pistorius was arrested in the early hours of Thursday morning at his home in South Africa, after allegedly shooting his girlfriend.

Reports coming out of South Africa say paramedics and police were called to the home of the 26 year old just after 4am local time, where they found 30 year old Reeva Steenkamp dead at the scene having been shot by a 9mm pistol.

The shooting apparently took place in the house of the athlete just outside Pretoria at the high security Silver Lakes development, with Pistorius claiming he believed Steenkamp was an intruder.

Police conducting the investigation have denied they released any statement that it was a case of mistaken identity and have confirmed that they will charge Pistorius with murder. They also confirmed that they have been called to his residence in the past in relation to a complain of assault and that witnesses have provided them with information on certain events that took place earlier in the evening.

Pistorius is due to appear in court tomorrow where the police will suggest that bail is denied on the weight of evidence they have in the ongoing investigation.

The “Blade Runner” made history in 2012 when he became the first amputee to compete in the Olympics.
