Christopher Froome won the eighth
stage of the 2013 Tour de France on Saturday and took the yellow jersey in the
process.

The 195-kilometer ride from Castres to Ax 3 Domaines was the first tough
mountain climb of the race. Froome completed the trek in just over five hours.

“It wasn’t easy out there but to come out with that result for the first
mountain day — the first real test for the GC riders — it’s really
pleasing,” Froome said.

Richie Porte finished 51 seconds behind Froome. Alejandro Valverde Belmonte,
Bauke Mollema and Laurens Ten Dam completed the top five.

Froome took the yellow jersey from South African rider Daryl Impey.

Sunday’s ninth stage is a 165-kilometer ride from Saint-Girons to Bagneres-
de-Bigorre.
