A Messi brace kept Barcelona and their unbeaten start going, while Madrid remain 8 points adrift despite their win. AC and Inter both lost in Serie A while Napoli and Lazio closed the gap on a congested league table in Italy.

There were further question marks against the leaky defence of Barcelona as they defeated Mallorca 4-2. Unbeaten Barca’s 10th victory in 11 La Liga matches, in which Xavi and Cristian Tello also scored, and haul of 31 points equalled the best start to a league campaign achieved twice by Real, in the 1968-69 and 1991-92 seasons.

Atletico Madrid kept pace with the leaders three points back in second with a 2-0 success at home to Getafe, while third-placed Real Madrid had Cristiano Ronaldo and substitute Alvaro Morata to thank in a 2-1 win in almost unplayable conditions at waterlogged Levante.

In Italy, Inter Milan missed the chance to close the gap to leaders Juventus, when they were downed 3-2 by Atlanta. Milan rivals AC continued their inconsistent form with another loss, this time at the hands of Fiorentina, 3-1, much to the disgust of the home fans. AC drop back to 13th in the table.

Stuttering Lazio relaunched their Serie A campaign by dominating Roma 3-1 in the Rome derby, Lazio now sit in 5th, only 2 points behind Napoli who defeated Genoa 4-2.
