Lakers downed again, New York beat Heat in emotional opener

Updated: November 3, 2012

Carmelo Anthony and the Knicks, did their utmost to give something back to their fans in New York that have lost so much over the last few days because of the super storm. That they did, with a very emotional win over the defending champions the Heat, at Madison Square Gardens. On a busy night of NBA action, there were also wins for the Bulls, Houston, led by a massive 45 point contribution by Harden, and the Clippers, that secured opening bragging rights in LA, inflicting another loss on the Lakers.

In New York, it was the season opener for the Knicks, following the delay of their opening game against Brooklyn. If ever a performance was more about just the team, then last night was the night. Desperate New Yorkers, still reeling from the devastating storm that lashed the East coast, needed something to lift their spirits, and an inspired performance by Carmelo Anthony did just that. Anthony contributed 30 points and 10 rebounds to the Knicks cause, in a 104-84 victory over the defending champions Miami.

For Miami, “the 3 Kings,” James, Wade and Bosh, failed to live up to their billing with 23, 15 and 12 points respectively, however the night deservedly belonged to New York, and more performances like that will go a long way to lifting the spirits of this resilient city.

In LA it’s been 34 years since the Lakers lost their first 3 games. Despite Kobe Bryant’s 40 point contribution, the younger Clippers got one over their superstar neighbours with a superb 105-95, lifting the Clippers to 2-0 in the Pacific Division.

James Harden continued his brilliant start at new team Houston, with massive 45 point contribution in their 109-102 win over Atlanta. New signing Jeremy Lin also made a telling contribution of his own with 21 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists. That’s 2 wins from 2 for the Rockets in the South West Division, level with San Antonio.

Kemba Walker was the star for Charlotte with 30 points, in a tight 90-89 win over Indiana, while Orlando thrashed Denver 102-89, Davis with 29 points.

There were also wins for Milwaukee over Boston, New Orleans came out on top in a 2 point game against Utah, 88-86, while Oklahoma, Minnesota, Phoenix and Memphis also registered wins over Portland, Sacramento, Detroit and Golden State respectively.

The Bulls continued their impressive start with a 115-86 rout over Cleveland. Star player Derrick Rose sat this one out due to injury, however in Hamilton, Boozer and Robinson the Bulls showed they are not a one man team. The Bulls go 2-0 for the fist time since 3003.
