Napoli, Athletico win, Spurs held

Reigning Europa League champions Atletico Madrid kicked off the defence of their title with a convincing 3-0 victory over Israeli club Hapoel Tel-Aviv.

Goals from Cristian Rodriguez and Diego Costa in the first half, allied by a third from Raul Garcia in the second period, saw the Spanish club stretch their European winning streak to 14 matches.

Liverpool were the only winners on the night amongst the English clubs. Fielding a second string team they beat Swiss team Young Boys in an absorbing 5-3 goal fest, Shelvey scoring a brace for Liverpool.

Newcastle had to be happy with a goalless draw with Maritimo Funchal, based on the Atlantic island of Madeira, while Surs and Lazio also played out a goalless draw.

French club Marseille snatched a dramatic 2-2 draw with Fenerbahce, while Inter Milan needed a stoppage time equaliser from Japan full-back Yuto Nagatomo to salvage a 2-2 draw at home to Russian side Rubin Kazan.

Other winners on the night, Genk, Lyon, Rosenborg, Levante and Plzen against Videoton FC, Sparta Prague, Vienna, Helsingborg and Academica  respectively.

The big shock of the night saw PSV going down 2-0 Dnipro.

Napoli had no such problems as they cruised to a 4-0 win over AIK, Vargas in superb form with 3 goals.
