Dortmund and Schalke drop points, Lazio cruise, Madrid through in Kings Cup

Schalke and Dortmund dropped points in the Bundesliga, Lazio climbed to 5th in Serie A with a comfortable win, Real Madrid and Malaga advanced to the last 16 in the Kings Cup and PSG were eliminated by St. Etienne on penalties in the French Cup on a busy night of League and Cup football across Europe.

In Germany, Both Borussia Dortmund and Schalke dropped points and possibly ground to league leaders Bayern Munich yesterday, Dortmund were held 1-1 by 10-man Fortuna Dusseldorf, while Schalke remain winless in 3 games following a 3-1 loss to Hamburg.

Dortmund have 26 points, while Munich are on 34 ahead of their trip to mid-table Freiburg on Wednesday. Dortmund visit Munich on Saturday and stayed second being because Schalke and Eintracht Frankfurt (24 points each) also lost, 3-1 in Hamburg and 3-1 at home against Mainz, respectively. But Bayer Leverkusen (24) can go second if they win in Bremen on Wednesday. Also in action tonight, Stuttgart v bottom club Augsburg, Moenchengladbach v Wolfsburg and Nuremberg v Hoffenheim.

In Italy, Lazio cruised to victory over Udinese 3-0, moving into 5th place only 2 points behind Inter Milan and Fiorentina and 6 behind leaders Juventus in what is becoming an increasingly congested top half of the table. Goals from Lazio’s Alvaro Gonzalez, Mirolsav Klose and Hernanes giving the Rome team the points in a comprehensive performance.

In Spain, Malaga scraped through to the last 16 of the Kings Cup despite being beaten 1-0 by third tier Cacereno, 4-4 was the final aggregate Malaga going through on away goals.

Real Madrid, Real Betis and Osasuna all reached the last 16, while second division Cordoba and Las Palmas claimed the scalps of top-flight sides to progress.

Mourinho gave four B team players a start against third-tier Alcoyano, including an official debut for 21-year-old winger Denis Cheryshev, who made his first appearance for Fabio Capello’s Russia in a friendly this month. In the French Cup PSG were knocked out on penalties by St. Etienne. Goalkeeper Stephane Ruffier sent them through 5-3 on penalties after the game ended 0-0.

On Wednesday, French champions Montpellier host Nice while Lille travel to Bastia. Stade Rennes host Troyes on Thursday.
