Defending Premier League champions Manchester City travel to Liverpool while Chelsea and Newcastle United meet among the pick of this weekend’s fixtures.

Elsewhere, Robin van Persie could be given his first Manchester United start when Fulham visit Old Trafford and the Dutchman’s former club, Arsenal, make the trip to Stoke City.

Manchester City last Sunday made tough work of their victory over Southampton and will know they cannot afford such a sloppy performance when they take on Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off sees Swansea City host West Ham United. Michael Laudrup made a dream start to life as a Premier League manager with the thrashing of Queens Park Rangers and the Dane will hope for a repeat against another London club in his first home match in charge.

In Spain, Champions Real Madrid make the short trip to Getafe on Sunday knowing that even at such an early stage as the season’s second weekend, a win is vital.

Bitter rivals Barcelona already have a two-point advantage after their opening day 5-1 thrashing of Real Sociedad.

Barca also have a tricky trip to Osasuna but will have Alex Song and David Villa available to start their first games of the season.

Valencia host a Deportivo La Coruna side on Sunday night, while Atletico Madrid and Athletic Bilbao will close the second round of games on Monday in a repeat of last season’s Europa League final.

In France all eyes will be on PSG and their host of new signings in particular Thiago and Ibrahimovic as they take on Bordeaux at home.

Serie A also kicks off this weekend as Juventus look for another unbeaten season. Manager Conte still has a 10 month ban so the Turin giants will have to contemplate life without their man for most of the season. The Champions kick off their season in front of their home supporters against Parma, while rivals AC take on Samdoria on Sunday at the San Siro.
