City out, Reds, United and Spurs advance

All the Premiership big got through their League Cup games last night unscathed. Holders Liverpool, Spurs, United, Norwich and Arsenal all joined the likes of Chelsea in the next round. The only major casualty of the round being City that went down at home to Villa 4-2 on Tuesday, Abonlahor the hero for the visitors with a brace of goals.

Swansea came from 2-1 down against Crawley Town on Tuesday with a 90th min Monk goal sending them through 3-2.

Everton were stunned at Leeds with a 2-1 loss, while Chelsea had no such problems cracking 6 past Wolverhampton.

West Ham was another Premiership club that was shown the exit door as Wigan came out on top 4-1 at Upton Park.

On Tuesday there were also wins for Southampton, Bradford, Swindon and Middlesbrough against Sheffield Wednesday, Burton Albion, Burnley and Preston respectively.

Wednesday saw Arsenal hit 6 past Coventry, Reading upset QPR at Loftus Road 3-2, while Norwich defeated Doncaster 1-0, a 25th minute goal from Tettey sending the Canaries through to the next round.

Liverpool temporarily put their League form behind them with a 2-1 win at the Hawthorns, while Spurs had few problems brushing Carlisle aside 3-0.

Rooney made a welcome return for United as they overcame Newcastle 2-1 in another all Premiership tie.
