Inches decided last night’s Euro 2012 semi-final as Bruno Alves’ fourth penalty for Portugal cannoned back off the underside of the crossbar while Cesc Fabregas’ winning spot-kick for Spain hit the face of the post and spun back across the line.

It was the faintest of margins in a game of precious incident as both Iberian rivals cancelled each other out following a lifeless 120 minutes, in which Spain only perked up in the second-half of extra-time.

For Vicente Del Bosque’s men they are now one game from winning a third consecutive major tournament in a competition they have scarcely hit top gear.

Italy and Germany will battle it out tonight to see who will fave the defending champions.
