Wayne Rooney edged closer to a fab 40 as Manchester United tightened their grip on the Premier League title.

The striker had been set the lofty goal target by boss Sir Alex Ferguson to ensure a 20th championship for the Old Trafford side. Rooney’s double took his tally to 32 and, with Danny Welbeck and Luis Nani also netting, United’s lead over Manchester City was back to five points.

Their neighbours will hope the opposition in the remaining four games can muster more fight than relegation-threatened Villa did in this Sunday stroll.
