Barca make Real wait

Barcelona’s 7-0 steamrolling of Rayo Vallecano showed they were feeling no hangover from Josep Guardiola’s upcoming exit and means Real Madrid must wait at least one more round of games to claim the Primera División title.

Madrid’s earlier 3-0 victory over Sevilla across the city had opened the possibility of José Mourinho’s side tying up the championship last night, while there was also uncertainty at Barca’s reaction in their first game after Guardiola had announced his departure, but the defending champions were in no mood to surrender their crown.

Lionel Messi was again the star with two goals and two assists, and Alexis Sánchez, Seydou Keita, Thiago Alcántara and Pedro Rodríguez (2) were also on scoresheet as a patched-up Rayo were blown away.

Real Madrid edged closer to their first league title in four years with a 3-0 win over Sevilla on Sunday, but Barcelona ensured their celebrations were put on hold with a 7-0 mauling of Rayo Vallecano.

Karim Benzema struck a second half brace after Cristiano Ronaldo had given Real the lead to beat Sevilla as Real took their record breaking haul of league goals for the season to 112.
