Messi and Ronaldo to the rescue

It was a case of anything you can do so can I in La Liga on Sunday night as Lionel Messi joined Cristiano Ronaldo at the top of the scoring charts with yet another double as Barcelona kept the pressure on Real Madrid at the top of the table.

Messi’s brace in Barca’s come-from-behind 2-1 win over Levante kept the Catalan side on the coattails of their arch rivals just hours after Madrid had opened up a seven point gap with a laboured 3-1 win over Sporting Gijon.

Ronaldo scored the decisive second for Los Blancos late on after they too were forced to dig deep to secure a vital three points in their quest to end Barca’s three-year monopoly of Spain after falling behind to Miguel de las Cuevas’ first-half penalty.

Both Messi and Ronaldo now find themselves tied on a record equalling 41 league goals for the campaign as the battle for the Golden Shoe looks to be headed the same way as the race for the title, down to the wire.
