Manchester United’s hopes of retaining their Premier League title suffered a potentially fatal blow on Sunday after they threw away a 4-2 lead with just seven minutes remaining to draw 4-4 with Everton.

Two goals for Wayne Rooney and further efforts from Danny Welbeck and Nani had put United in front at 3-1 and 4-2 but Nikica Jelavic, who had scored the first of the days eight goals, made it 4-3 eight minutes from time and Steven Pienaar capped an incredible afternoon with an 85th minute equaliser.

Manchester City closed the gap to three points and doomed Wolves to relegation with a 2-0 victory. Goals from Sergio Aguero and Samir Nasri sealed victory for the visitors who now have their fate back in their own hands ahead of next Monday’s derby with United.

West Bromwich Albion earned a first win at Anfield in 45 years on Sunday with a 1-0 victory over Liverpool that saw the hosts continue their recent poor league run.
