Manchester United have confirmed they have agreed a fee with Premier League rivals Arsenal to sign Dutch striker Robin van Persie.

Just 43 days after confirming his desire to quit the Gunners, van Persie looks set to become the first player in 25 years to swap Arsenal for rivals United, the last being Viv Anderson in 1987.

Van Persie’s fellow Dutchman Ruud Gullit took to Twitter to declare the move as a “new beginning” for the 29-year-old, who is expected to travel to Manchester on Thursday to discuss personal terms and undergo a medical.

While neither side has disclosed the fee, it has been reported United will pay as much as £24million, an incredible figure when you consider van Persie’s age, past injury record and the fact he only had a year remaining on his contract.

Van Persie, currently on international duty with Holland, is expected to put pen-to-paper on a four-year deal with the transfer representing the biggest deal United have done since Dimitar Berbatov’s club record £30.75m move from Tottenham in 2008.
