Isner and Kvitova warm up for the US Open in style

John Isner won his second straight Winston-Salem ATP title on Sunday, surviving three match points en route to a 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (11/9) victory over second-seeded Tomas Berdych.

Isner, seeded third, successfully defended a title for the second time this season to go into the US Open starting Monday at Flushing Meadows on a roll.

On the WTA, Petra Kvitova beat Maria Kirilenko 7-6 (9), 7-5 on Saturday to win the New Haven Open, the Czech star’s second WTA tournament title in three weeks.

The second-seeded Kvitova trailed 5-2 in the second set before reeling off five consecutive games for the victory that avenged a loss to the Russian in the Olympic quarterfinals.

The fifth-ranked player in the world has won 12 of her last 13 hardcourt matches this season heading into the US Open.
