Nadal and Federer start well in Halle

Rafa Nadal and five-time champion Roger Federer both enjoyed comfortable opening wins to their grasscourt season at Halle on Thursday.

Nadal defeated Slovakia’s Lukas Lacko 7-5, 6-1 in the second round while Federer also cruised into the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Germany’s Florian Mayer.

Kohlschreiber, the defending champion, made the last eight with a 6-7 (5/7), 6-1, 6-3 win over Poland’s Lukasz Kubot.

At Queens the seeds continued to fall as former champion Tsonga was downed by Dodig 7-6, 3-6,7-6.The tournament is now wide open as Hewitt, Murray, Roddick and Simon are all out.

Earlier, South Africa’s Kevin Anderson advanced to the last eight for the first time after defeating Spanish fifth seed Feliciano Lopez 7-6 (12/10), 7-6 (9/7).
