Rafael Nadal’s hopes of landing a second US Open crown and a 12th Grand Slam title in all are over – for this season at least – after the Spaniard was forced to withdraw from this month’s tournament due to a persistent knee injury.

Nadal, 26, failed to defend his Olympic title won four years ago in Beijing at London 2012 with the same problem and has not played since crashing to a shock second round defeat at Wimbledon.

The world No3, who completed his set of Grand Slams by winning in New York in 2010, also sat out the Masters Series events in Toronto and Cincinnati but hoped he would be fit to play at Flushing Meadows.
