Serena named WTA player of the year

Serena Williams has been named the WTA player of the year for a fourth time following a fantastic second half of the year, which saw her win an Olympic Gold and Wimbledon at the All England Club, and another US Open title.

The year started very slow for the younger of the two sisters due to injury and form however back-to-back tournament wins in Charleston and Madrid in April and May marked a remarkable change in fortune for the world No 3, going on to win 48 of 50 matches in the second half of the season.

Williams previously won the award in 2002, 2008 and 2009.
