Top 8 gunning for season ending glory in London

Updated: November 5, 2012

The worlds top 8 mens tennis players for 2012, gather at the O2 Arena in London this week, as they battle it out for the coveted World Tour Finals tile, the season ending showpiece most of the players want to win outside of the four Grand Slams.

Roger Federer is the defending champion, and has registered the most wins in the history of the tournament with 6, and the Swiss Maestro will be hoping to add another to his 6 titles already won in 2012.

Novak Djokovic has reclaimed the world no.1 ranking from Federer this week and has enjoyed another superb year, with 3 Masters Series wins, the Australian Open and the title in Beijing recently. The world no.1 is also a former winner of the Finals, in 2008 he defeated Davydenko when the tournament was played in Shanghai.

Andy Murray has had a breakthrough year this year with his first Slam, lifting the US Open. Murray has been to the semifinals on 2 occasions however will be hoping to go at least 1 better in front of his home fans.

David Ferrer is one of the most underrated players on Tour. The number 4 seed has enjoyed his best season on the ATP Tour this year with no less than 7 tournament wins, most recently his first Masters title in Paris last week. With 2 consecutive wins over the last 2 weeks, the Spaniard comes in off the back of 2 weeks of solid tennis, one can only hope that fatigue doesn’t hamper his chances.

Tomas Berdych, Juan Martin Del Potro, Jo Wilfred Tsonga and Janko Tipsarevic are the remaining players that make up the elite 8. One noticeable absentee is Rafa Nadal who remains injured. All of these 4 are capable of upsetting the big top seeds and have done so before, so don’t count them out.

The format is slightly different to the normal Tour. The top 8 are separated into 2 groups, with round robin matches to take place between the players in the same group. The top 2 in each group will then qualify for the semifinals.

Below are the respective groups.
