New York, NY (Sports Network) – Freelance writer Ryan Goldberg has won the
Media Eclipse Award in the Feature/Commentary category. The winning story,
“Keiber Coa Presses on a Year After Father’s Fateful Spill,” was about the
relationship between father-son jockeys Eibar and Keiber Coa and appeared in
the Daily Racing Form ‘DRF Weekend’ edition on July 7.

“I feel incredibly proud of the work and grateful to receive this honor,” said
Goldberg. “I grew up reading all of the racing greats who influenced my work,
like Bill Nack and Joe Hirsch. To see my name next to theirs on this award is
overwhelming.”

This is the New Jersey-native’s first Media Eclipse Award after receiving an
Honorable Mention last year in the News-Enterprise Writing Media Eclipse
category. His father, Lew, was a trainer on the New Jersey racing circuit.

The article covers a 19 month time period during which Keiber Coa went from
being a student jockey to successful apprentice all while his father, Eibar,
suffered a terrible injury from a racing accident goes through rehabilition to
recovery.

“I intended to write this story about Keiber’s recent success,” said Goldberg.
“But Eibar was extremely revealing about the spill, and spoke of how much he
wanted Keiber to grow on his own terms, that the piece become more balanced
between the two of them.”

The media awards are presented by the National Thoroughbred Racing Association
(NTRA), Daily Racing Form and the National Turf Writers and Broadcasters
(NTWAB) for outstanding achievement in media coverage of thoroughbred racing.
Trophies will be presented to the Award winners at the 42nd annual Eclipse
Awards on Saturday, Jan, 19, 2013, at Gulfstream Park Racetrack and Casino in
Hallandale Beach, Fla.
