San Martin, CA (Sports Network) – Akemi Nakata Khaiat carded an even-par 72 on
Saturday to grab the lead after the first round of the USGA Senior Women’s
Amateur Championship.

Sherry Herman and Liz Waynick shot matching 1-over 73s to share second place,
while Caryn Wilson, Helene Maxe, Kim Eaton and Mina Hardin are tied for fourth
at 2-over 74.

Lisa Schlesinger and Mary Jane Hiestand share eighth place at 3-over 75.

Defending champion Ellen Port tripped to an 8-over 80 during her opening round
at CordeValle Golf Club to sit among a group of players tied for 43rd place.

Khaiat followed an opening par with a birdie at the second, but then stumbled
to a double-bogey 7 at the third to fall to 1-over.

She bounced right back with a birdie at the fourth, and then traded a bogey at
the sixth with a birdie at the eighth to make the turn at even par.

Khaiat opened her inward nine with a birdie at the 10th to again reach 1-
under. After back-to-back bogeys at the 12th and 13th dropped her to 1-over,
she got back to even par with a gain at the 16th.

She parred her final two holes to remain there.

Herman recorded three bogeys and two birdies during her first round, while
Waynick countered three birdies with a bogey and a double bogey to earn her
share of second place.
