Khaiat, Port advance at Senior Women’s Amateur

San Martin, CA (Sports Network) – Stroke-play medalist Akemi Nakata Khaiat and
defending champion Ellen Port both won their matches Monday to advance at the
USGA Senior Women’s Amateur Championship.

Khaiat cruised to a 5 & 4 win over Ellie Layton at CordeValle Golf Club.
Khaiat won four in a row from the fourth. Layton trimmed the deficit to 3-down
with a par on the ninth, but Khaiat took the 10th and 12th to move 5-up. She
parred the following two holes to earn the win.

Khaiat moves on to face Lisa McGill, who earned a 2-up victory over 2012 USGA
Senior Women’s Amateur runner-up Jane Fitzgerald.

Port trailed 1-down for six of the first 14. She won three straight holes from
the 15th to rally and earn a 2 & 1 win over Lisa Smego. Port will face Patty
Moore, a 5 & 4 victor over Gigi Higgins, in round two.

Marilyn Hardy, 2012 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur runner-up Liz Waynick and Marie-
Therese Torti all needed 19 holes to advance, while former U.S. Women’s Mid-
Amateur champion Corey Weworski downed 2010 USGA Senior Women’s Amateur
runner-up Alexandra Frazier in 21 holes.

Kathy Kurata, 2013 European Senior Ladies champion Helene Maxe and 2010
champion Mina Hardin all cruised to 6 & 5 wins, while Mary Budke won 6 & 4.

Terri Frohmeyer, the 2011 champion, and 2009 winner Sherry Herman also moved
on to the second round.
