Birmingham, AL (SportsNetwork.com) – Matthew Mattare carded a 2-under 69 on
Sunday to earn medalist honors at the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship.

Mattare, who was a quarterfinalist last year, finished the stroke play portion
of the championship at 5-under-par 136.

Mattare played his second round at the West Course at the Country Club of
Birmingham and started on the 10th tee, which he parred before tripping to a
bogey at the 11th. He bounced right back with a birdie at the 12th, but fell
back to 2-under with a bogey at the 14th.

After rolling in back-to-back gains at the 17th and 18th to make the turn at
4-under, he dropped a shot at the first. The New Jersey native got that shot
back with a gain at the third and later birdied the eighth to reach 5-under.
He parred his final hole to finish there.

Kenny Cook fired the low round of the day with a 5-under 65 on the East Course
to jump into sole possession of second place at 3-under 138, while first-round
co-leader Kevin Marsh tripped to a 2-over 73 at the East Course on Sunday to
fall into a tie for third with Bill Williamson (67) at 2-under.

Todd White also had a share of the first-round lead with Marsh, but could only
manage a 3-over 74 on the West Course to drop into a tie for fifth with Tim
Jackson (71), Paul Simson (70), Jon Veneziano (71) and Michael McCoy (72) at
minus-1.

The match play portion of the tournament begins on Monday and will conclude
with Championship match on Thursday.
