Guangzhou, China (Sports Network) – Alize Cornet of France and Laura Robson of
Great Britain were among Wednesday’s second-round winners at the Guangzhou
Open tennis event.

The second-seeded Cornet beat Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic by a 7-6

rallied past Vesna Dolonc 2-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Robson, the No. 3 seed, defeated Saisai Zheng of China by a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4)
score. Robson, last year’s Guangzhou runner-up to Taiwan’s Su-Wei Hsieh, will
next do battle with Jie Zheng, who discarded Timea Babos 7-5, 7-6 (7-1).

Johanna Konta of Great Britain and Shuai Zhang of China pulled off upsets on
Wednesday. Konta handled No. 4 seed Shuai Peng 6-1, 6-3 and Zhang cruised past
Hsieh 6-2, 6-2.

Eighth-seeded Monica Puig of Puerto Rico beat Galina Voskoboeva 6-3, 6-2.
Puig, who made some noise earlier this summer with a fourth-round appearance
in her first trip to Wimbledon, will next meet American Vania King, who
outlasted Bojana Jovanovski 6-4, 0-6, 6-4.

Jovanovski was last week’s winner in Uzbekistan.
