Ivanovic to face Venus in Auckland final
Auckland, New Zealand (SportsNetwork.com) – Ana Ivanovic earned a straight-set
victory in Friday’s semifinals, while Venus Williams advanced via walkover to
secure a spot in the title match at the season-opening ASB Classic tennis
event, a hardcourt Australian Open tune-up.
The second-seeded Serb Ivanovic bageled Kirsten Flipkens in the first set
before outlasting the third-seeded Belgian in a second-set tiebreak en route
to a 6-0, 7-6 (7-3) triumph at ASB Tennis Centre.
Williams was set to square off with fellow American Jamie Hampton, but the
fifth-seeded Hampton was forced to pull out due to a right hip injury.
The 33-year-old Williams has dominated the 26-year-old Ivanovic over the
years, owning an 8-1 mark in the head-to-head series between the two fellow
former world No. 1s.
Ivanovic will be looking for her 12th career WTA title in her 17th final,
while Williams will be trying for her 45th championship.
Saturday’s titlist will claim $43,000.
