Serena and Venus reach Open doubles semis

Flushing Meadows, NY (Sports Network) – The women’s doubles juggernaut of
Serena Williams and Venus Williams posted a quarterfinal victory Thursday
by topping the top seeds at the 2013 U.S. Open.

The 31-year-old Serena and 33-year-old Venus clipped the world No. 1 Italian
duo of Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci 6-3, 6-1 on the hardcourts at the USTA
Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Errani and Vinci were this year’s Australian Open champs and captured last
year’s U.S. and French Open titles.

The mighty Williams sisters will meet a fifth-seeded Czech tandem of Andrea
Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka in a semifinal on Friday. Hlavackova will also
play in Friday’s mixed doubles finale.

Serena and Venus own a whopping 13 Grand Slam doubles titles, including U.S.
Open wins in 1999 and 2009. They also own three Olympic gold medals in

One of Saturday’s doubles finalists was established on Thursday when eighth-
seeded Aussies Ashleigh Barty and Casey Dellacqua topped a 10th-seeded
tandem of Indian Sania Mirza and Chinese Zheng Jie 6-2, 6-2 in the first
semifinal of the week.

The 17-year-old Barty and 28-year-old Dellacqua were doubles runners-up at
this year’s Aussie Open and Wimbledon events.
