Sharapova battles back to lift Madrid title
Maria Sharapova continued her build up to the French Open in dominant form when she defeated Simona Halep in the final of the Madrid Masters.
Sharapova, fresh off a third consecutive title in Stuttgart, had to call on all her reserves after going a set down to the talented Romanian, who was featuring in her first major final.
Halep scorched through the first set, brushing aside the 4 times Grand Slam champion, 6/1, however the Russian started to show glimpses of her best form as she came back to win the last 2 sets, 6/2, 6/3, to register her 9th title on clay and the 31st WTA Tour title of her career.
Sharapova missed most of the second half of 2013 due to injury and has stuttered on her return until recent weeks were she has displayed some of her best form, suggesting she will be a contender for the title at the French Open.
