Venus joins Serena in Dubai quarters

Updated: February 19, 2014

Venus Williams joined her sister Serena in the quarterfinals of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships following a stunning win over Ana Ivanovic in straight sets.

Venus who lost to Ivanovic in the final of the ASB Classic in Auckland earlier in the year turned the tables on her opponent in spectacular fashion with a 6/2, 6/1 romp which would have provided some quiet satisfaction for her sister Serena who was knocked out of the Australian Open in the fourth round by the same opponent.

It does set up a slight prospect of an all Williams final if she can get past Flavia Pennetta and a possible semifinal against Carolina Wozniacki.

The last time the sisters faced each other was in Charleston in 2013 with Serena winning comfortably in straight sets. The sisters have faced each other on 24 occasions, Serena coming out on top in 14 including the last 5.

In other action Alize Cornet dispatched Kirsten Flipkens in straight sets, number 8 seed Carolina Wozniacki brushed aside Annika Beck and Jelena Jankovic accounted for Lucie Safarova.
